Wedding Planning Wednesday: Planning Your Themed Engagement Session

We love photographing engagement sessions! The sessions are usually very light hearted, fun, and it’s usually the first time we get to interact with our couples on a more personal level outside of our photography studio.  Our couples always ask us for ideas as to how they can make their session more personal. Everything from choosing the perfect location, ideal season, props and clothing can really impact the look and feel of your session.

For example, last year we photographed Shireen and Ranjeev’s engagement session at the Montgomery County Air Park. They had a long distance relationship. She lived in Texas and he lived in London. They spent hours jetting back and forth to visit one another. Private air planes, corporate jets, luggage, aviator sunglasses and even a Bentley were significant for this couple because it symbolized their long distance relationship.

Pick a location: Choices such as the location of your first date, your alma mater or even a location that represents your relationship well are ideal.

Pick a season: If you’re getting married in the winter plan a spring or summer engagement session. Picking a season which is different than the season your wedding is taking place during will provide different and dynamic photographs. Also keep in mind your timeline for save the date cards and other photography products such as guest signature books and canvases that you may want to display on your big day.

Pick some props: Props always add a fun dynamic to your engagement session. If you’re having a summer engagement in amusement park for example, consider utilizing funnel cakes, ice cream cones and baseball hats.
