It was a rainy night in Philadelphia when Bob texted his friend Sunny to meet him in the city. There was a girl Sunny HAD to meet. You see, she was perfect for him. Despite Bob’s persistence, Sunny denied, he had exams to study for.
Four months, and a few exams later, Bob and Sunny were hanging out and perusing various social media outlets. “Wait, stop, scroll back up. Who’s that girl?” Sunny asked.
“That’s Reema, the girl I tried to introduce you to.” Bob replied. Somewhere in the background, Sunny heard the Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge theme-song playing. Sunny asked Bob if all hope was lost, because as we all know, four months is a very long time in Bollywood movies.
Bob assured Sunny that he still had a chance and gave him Reema’s phone number. After nights of endless texting back and forth, Sunny went forth to finally meet and wood Reema – leather jacket and banjo in hand.
Reema and Sunny instantly bonded over fast food, Bollywood movies and singing old show tunes. As the text messages turned into dates that turned into long weekends. They both knew there was something there and Sunny was excited to make Reema the happiest woman in the world.
Sunny’s little sister, Sonam, had a birthday that was quickly approaching. Reema wanted to make sure the day was everything Sonam wanted! Sonam told her she wanted a girl’s day with the works – brunch, nails, and the art museum. After a few mimosas (a bottle or two of champagne) and a couple of shiny manicures later, they made their way to the art museum to meet with Sunny.
Once Sunny got there Sonam left to “meet with a friend” while Sunny showed Reema the grounds of the museum. He took her to a gazebo, reminiscent of the one in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and asked her to dance. She giggled and whispered, “no music”.
To her surprise he gave her a gift – it was in a small black jewelry box. She felt her heart beating faster, this was it, he was going to propose. Her palms sweating, her hands shaking, and her heart beating, she opened the small black box. There, in front of her eyes, was a big, round, shiny… golden snitch locket from Harry Potter!
“It’s a locket, open it!” he urged as she struggled to compose herself after quite possibly one of the biggest let downs of her life. She smiled, and realized that it didn’t matter if she didn’t get a ring because she was now a proud owner of a golden snitch locket. Reema read the small message inscribed the locket, “Will you marry me?” As she looked down at Sunny, who was now on bended knee with a shiny diamond ring and responded,
“Always.”
Sunny and Reema had a three day world wind wedding spanning three states, four hundred guests and a kindred kind of love set to a bollywood song. Their weekend started with Grah Shanti Puja’s and mehndi parties followed by a transition to the BWI Marriott for a Garba followed by a hindu ceremony and reception. At every turn there were more surprises, more family and friends and plenty of love and laughter.
